Asphyx emerged in the late 1980s as one of Holland's first extreme metal outfits, unleashing an unrelenting blend of death and doom metal. Founded in Overijssel in 1987 by drummer Bob Bagchus and guitarist Tonny Brookhuis, the band recorded early demos before lineup changes brought in ex-Pestilence vocalist Martin van Drunen. They signed with Century Media Records in 1990 and released a string of albums including The Rack (1991) and Last One on Earth (1993), though none broke them out of the death metal underground. The band split, reformed, and cycled through members over the years. A 2007 reunion with van Drunen, Gubbels, Baayens, and Bagchus led to the acclaimed Death...The Brutal Way (2009). Deathhammer (2012) followed as Bagchus's last album with the group. New drummer Stefan Hüskens joined for Incoming Death (2016), and in 2021 Asphyx issued their tenth full-length Necroceros, proving the band still commanded their uncompromising death-doom sound.
